Perlight PowerPlug UK Review: The Most-Certified Plug-In Solar Kit

This article contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This does not influence our recommendations — we call out weaknesses as plainly as strengths.

Perlight Solar has 13 compliant models on the ENA G98 Type Test Register — joint-largest with City Plumbing, and the first plug-in solar entries to be published when the register opened on 27 August 2026. If you have searched for a certified plug-in kit and been sent in circles, Perlight is the brand the register keeps pointing at.

Perlight itself is a Chinese panel manufacturer that sells through distributors, not a consumer brand, which is why the name is unfamiliar despite dominating the register. In the UK the PowerPlug kits reach the public through the solar retailer Plug In Solar.

Quick Facts - Register status: 13 compliant Plug-in Solar listings (30 September 2026) — joint-largest range on the register - ⚠️ Watch the "+": five newer PowerPlug+ models (codes PLM-PPM-M2-500/930/1000 and PLM-PPM-SPE2-465/500) are listed non-compliant since 26 September. Only PowerPlug+ MAX 465 (M2-465) is compliant. Check the code on the box - Ranges: PowerPlug MAX, PowerPlug FLEX+ and the newer single-panel PowerPlug / FLEX entries - UK price: £588–£810 inc VAT via Plug In Solar - Warranty: the UK retailer advertises a 10-year warranty on these kits (terms are footnoted on its listings — worth reading before you buy) - Battery: none — these are solar-only kits, which is what keeps them inside the socket route - Notification: register at myplugin.solar, about two minutes

The Short Answer

Perlight PowerPlug is the safest certification bet on the UK market: thirteen listed models, listed from day one, and a retail route that puts them in a consumer's hands without a trade account. It is not the cheapest way to buy certified watts — City Plumbing undercuts it by roughly £350 on a comparable two-panel kit — and you pay for a specialist retailer's support and warranty handling rather than for a better panel.

Buy it if you want a certified kit from a specialist retailer with an advertised 10-year warranty and someone to call. Buy City Plumbing if you want the same legal outcome for less money.

The Range, Decoded

The thirteen compliant register entries fall into four groups, and the naming is genuinely confusing:

Range Models listed Registered capacity What it is
PowerPlug MAX 465, 500, 930, 1000 0.8 kW The main range — 800W inverter, one or two panels
PowerPlug FLEX+ 465, 500, 930, 1000 0.8 kW Same outputs, flexible/adjustable mounting
PowerPlug and FLEX (SPE) 465, 500 ×2 0.5 kW Added 7 September — a 500W-class single-panel variant
PowerPlug+ MAX 465 only (PLM-PPM-M2-465) 0.8 kW Compliant since 24 September. The other five PowerPlug+ models are not — see below

The number in the name is panel DC watts, not output. A PowerPlug MAX 1000 is two roughly 500W panels behind an 800W AC microinverter; it will not export more than 800W at any moment. The four newest entries registered at 0.5 kW are a genuinely smaller system, not just a smaller panel.

UK Prices

Read from pluginsolar.co.uk on 18 September 2026. The retailer displays ex-VAT first, so check which figure you are reading.

Kit Panels Price inc VAT
PowerPlug MAX 465W 1 panel £588.00
PowerPlug MAX 500W 1 panel £594.00
PowerPlug MAX 930W 2 panels £798.00
PowerPlug MAX 1kW (1000W) 2 panels £810.00

All four include the 800W microinverter and the plug-and-play cable. Mounting varies by kit and is the main thing to check before ordering — the FLEX+ line exists specifically because the MAX mounting does not suit every surface.

What It Saves

A south-facing 800W system in London generates around 860 kWh a year. At the October 2026 Ofgem cap of 26.32p/kWh with 75% self-consumption, that is roughly £170 a year.

Kit Price Rough annual saving Simple payback
PowerPlug MAX 465W £588 ~£85 ~6.9 years
PowerPlug MAX 930W £798 ~£170 ~4.7 years
PowerPlug MAX 1kW £810 ~£175 ~4.6 years

A 4.6–4.7 year payback on the two-panel kits is respectable against a 25-year panel life, but it is nearly twice the 2.6 years the equivalent City Plumbing kit returns. The single-panel kits are hard to justify at £588: the inverter and mounting cost the same as on the two-panel kit, so you pay most of the price for half the generation.

Why Perlight Dominates the Register

Four of the thirteen original register entries on 27 August were Perlight, and the brand has stayed ahead since. That is a reflection of testing strategy rather than product quality: Perlight submitted each panel-and-mount permutation as a separate device, so a range of two mounting styles and four panel sizes produces eight listings.

This matters practically in one way. Because the entries are per-permutation, a Perlight kit that is not on the register is not covered by a sibling model's listing. If you buy a PowerPlug configuration from a grey importer that does not match a listed model code, you are outside the socket route and back on the full G98 form. Match the model code, not the product name.

Thirteen Perlight listings are Plug-in Solar device-type entries marked compliant — the specific status that carries the socket self-install route created by SI 2026/848 on 27 August 2026.

Five are not. On 26 September 2026 Perlight's newer PowerPlug+ line appeared on the register as non-compliant: PowerPlug+ MAX 500, 930 and 1000 (PLM-PPM-M2-500/930/1000) and PowerPlug+ 465 and 500 (PLM-PPM-SPE2-465/500). Only PowerPlug+ MAX 465 (PLM-PPM-M2-465) is compliant. The kits currently sold at Plug In Solar are the compliant PowerPlug MAX (PLM-PPM-M-…) models, but the names differ by a single "+" and a "2" in the code — if you are offered a PowerPlug+, check the exact code in our certified kit finder before buying. "Non-compliant" can mean incomplete documentation rather than a failed test, and status can change on retest.

Where It Falls Short

The price gap is hard to defend on spec. A DMEGC panel on a Hoymiles HF-800-WB at £444 does the same job as a Perlight panel on its microinverter at £798. You are buying warranty handling and a specialist retailer, not more electricity.

Twelve near-identical model codes. PLM-PPM-M-465 and PLM-PPF-SPE-465 differ by mounting and registered capacity, and the register is the only place the difference is stated plainly.

No consumer support from Perlight. Perlight is a manufacturer; its own site is a B2B catalogue with no UK pricing and no PowerPlug consumer pages. Every warranty conversation goes through the retailer.

No battery, no storage upgrade. As with every kit inside the socket route, adding an integrated battery moves the system out of myplugin.solar and into full G98 notification.

Verdict

Perlight PowerPlug MAX / FLEX+
Best for: buyers who want the longest-standing certified range and a named UK retailer behind the sale
Not for: cost-driven buyers — the same legal outcome costs ~£350 less elsewhere
13 compliant listings · £588–£810 inc VAT · checked 18 September 2026

Perlight is the brand that proves the register works: certified from day one, purchasable now, and boringly reliable in the one respect that matters legally. The premium is real, though, and worth paying only if the retailer relationship is worth £350 to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I buy Perlight PowerPlug kits in the UK? A: Through the solar retailer Plug In Solar (pluginsolar.co.uk), which lists the MAX range from £588 inc VAT. Perlight does not sell direct to UK consumers — its own site is a trade catalogue with no prices.

Q: Is the Perlight PowerPlug certified for socket installation? A: The PowerPlug MAX, FLEX+ and SPE kits are — thirteen Perlight entries in total are listed compliant on the ENA G98 Type Test Register under the Plug-in Solar device type, which is the status that carries the socket self-install route. Five newer PowerPlug+ models are listed non-compliant (all except PowerPlug+ MAX 465), so check your exact model code in our certified kit finder.

Q: What is the difference between PowerPlug MAX and FLEX+? A: Mounting. Both ranges cover the same 465W–1000W panel sizes behind the same 800W microinverter; FLEX+ uses adjustable mounting hardware aimed at surfaces the MAX bracket does not suit. Both are separately listed on the register.

Q: Is Perlight PowerPlug worth it compared with City Plumbing? A: On electricity generated, no — the two-panel kits produce the same ~860 kWh a year, and City Plumbing's DMEGC 930W costs £444 against Perlight's £798. The Perlight premium buys a specialist retailer, its advertised 10-year warranty and a support channel.

Q: Does a Perlight kit need a G98 form? A: No — because it is on the register and socket-connected, you register at myplugin.solar in about two minutes instead. The notification requirement itself has not gone away. See the DNO & G98 notification guide.

Q: Can I add a battery to a Perlight PowerPlug system? A: Not as an integrated kit. Every battery-integrated plug-in system is excluded from the socket route and needs a full G98 notification. See Do You Need Battery Storage?
